2012 Vinnies Doorknock Appeal Throughout February
The appeal is a very important part of the Society’s fundraising efforts and enables volunteers and staff to assist the less fortunate of our community. Over the past few years, our members and volunteers have received an increase in demand for assistance in January and February after the festive season, and are expecting more calls for assistance this year.
The funds raised from Doorknock cover the provision of food, emergency accommodation, clothing, school fees, medical costs, and other financial assistance that helps lessen the burden from those we assist.
In 2010/2011, there was a strong demand for our members and volunteers to assist families and individuals in Canberra and Queanbeyan. The common theme reported was that the complexity of problems facing these people, and the value of assistance required to address these problems, has increased significantly. Once again, illustrating that more and more disadvantaged people are becoming trapped in the systemic poverty cycle; a condition that once entered is very hard to ever leave.
In Canberra and Queanbeyan alone:
• 24,992 families and individuals were assisted by our members and volunteers
• $526,377 was spent on providing food to these people in need
• $288,205 was spent on other costs to help alleviate their burden, including utility bills, mortgage/rent payments, and medical costs.
Doorknock is an important local annual appeal for the Society to raise funds for people in need, and has a 30 year history in Canberra and Queanbeyan.
Our biggest challenge each year is getting to the doors of thousands of people in Canberra who are willing to give generously, and this year we need more volunteers than ever before to get to these homes we need to call on in order to reach our $300,000 target.
Why you should support the 2012 Vinnies Doorknock Appeal:
• You’ll be raising money for families and people in the community who need it most
• Doorknocking is a great activity to do with family and friends
• You can collect money in your street or suburb on any day during February
• Doorknocking can be great exercise. You could even finish up with a BBQ in a local park after you’ve finished!
• In just one hour, you could collect hundreds of dollars for those in need.

We've also just found out that David (Wolfman) Williams from the Manly Sea Eagles will be attending on the night, as well as Terry Campeze and a table of Canberra Raiders Players! And that's just the half of it!

Harold White Fellow Presentation: The Power of Hair in Chinese Society 5:30pm - 7:00pm
The dominant paradigm of modern Chinese history is concerned with state-society relations. Chi Kong Lai alternatively explores social change and everyday life in China through examining the historical import of hair in the development of modern China from the late imperial period to the present. His analysis treats hairstyle as part of the quest by individuals for identity and diversity and so reveals new insights into the relationship between individual and society. In assessing hairstyle in relation to social, cultural and economic change over five centuries, this presentation will also consider the impact of changing hairstyles on Chinese business practices, such as marketing strategies and consumption patterns in relation to change in fashions.
Dr. Chi Kong Lai is Reader in Modern Chinese History at the University of Queensland. He has also held visiting appointments at the National Library of Australia, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Academia Sinica, Centre for Chinese Studies, National University of Singapore, Harvard University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

With so much information proliferating on the internet and no mechanisms in place to check for accuracy, how can consumers distinguish what is right and what is not? This is particularly important when it comes to health information, since 1 in 2 of us now “self-diagnose” and 2 in 3 research our medications on the web. Using the example of vaccination information, Dr Rachael Dunlop sifts through the quagmire of Google and reveals conspiracies involving “Big Pharma”, a New World Order with Lizard People, chemtrails, and a plethora of misleading information. In a time when many parts of the world are experiencing as resurgence in communicable diseases, Rachael offers some tricks and tips for navigating the “bottomless pit of misinformation” that is health information on the internet.
Dr Rachael Dunlop PhD is a medical researcher at the Heart Research Institute Sydney, Vice President of Australian Skeptics, a reporter for the Skeptic Zone podcast, blogs at the Skeptics Book of Pooh Pooh and a member of Mystery Investigators science show for kids.

Capital Punishment Comedy Showcase 7.30pm
On their way to Melbourne, they'll be doing a Canberra comedy showcase at the Canberra Irish Club on Feb 16 as well as a host of NSW regional dates.
The line-up has a familiar flavour to last year with festival veteran Kale Bogdanovs, Rafe Morris and Greg Kimball returning; with gifted festival newcomers Jez Margosis and Marie Helou joining the ride in 2012. There will be a host of local special guest performers joining the Capital Punishment crew on the night as well, including Jay Sullivan, Emo Parsonson and more to be announced when we ask them. It's set to be a bumper night, don't miss it.
The self-funded group hopes to see a huge crowd at the Irish Club on February 16 in what will be a fundraiser to cover their costs in Melbourne, including travel, accommodation and masses of cheese and bacon balls.
Tickets are $15ea and can be booked through comedyact.com.au, the Irish Club or at the door.

Harold White Fellow Presentation: The Subversive Tourist: How Tourism Rewrote Australian History 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Australian cultural historian Richard White reflects on the way popular tourism’s fascination for the lurid, the macabre and the sensational often undermined more respectable perspectives on Australia’s past. This presentation explores the beginnings of ‘historic’ tourism in Australia from the late nineteenth century, when a society that imagined itself as new began to discover it had a past worth visiting. While governments were prepared to celebrate explorers, pioneers and political figures, the past that tourists persisted in seeking out was a more disreputable one. They were less interested in being inspired than in being entertained. Convicts, bushrangers and rebellious diggers became standard tourist fare surprisingly early. By catering for more vulgar tastes, tourist operators and ordinary tourists themselves wrote their own versions of Australia’s past.
Richard White is a Senior Lecturer in Australian history at the University of Sydney, widely known for his seminal books Inventing Australia: Images and Identity 1688 to 1980 (1981) and On Holidays: a History of Getting Away in Australia (2005). His Fellowship research contributes to his larger current project Touring the past: tourism and history in Australia 1850-2010.
