ACT Highland Dancing Championships and Competition 8.30am onwards
Champion Male Highland Dancer returns to Canberra on 5th of June, 2010 to reclaim the Title Kyle Marston from NSW will return to Canberra on Saturday 5th of June, 2010 to reclaim the 16 years and over highland dancing championship title he won last year. Kyle is currently the Australasian and Champion of Champion winner in the adult age group throughout Australia. When he competes at the ACT National Highland Dancing Championships and Competition at the Canberra Burns Club this year he will be up against some strong competition from all states of Australia. Local Canberra dancers: Jessica and Jenna Girvan, Eliza Russell, Aleshia Thornton and Shannon Wood will also be dancing to win the championship on the day. At this stage, Kyle is the only male dancer entered, but his strength and technique is something to sit back and watch in awe!
The competition will commence with championships in all age groups (aged from 7-16 years and over) at 8.30am. Large prize money and great prizes are up for grabs in all three championships to be judged by three female adjudicators from Victoria and NSW. Local dancing pipers Rod Parker and Sean Hodgman will pipe for the dancers on the day. The afternoon session will see children as young as six years take to the stage, plus those dancers yet to reach championship level. A wide variety of dancers are executed not just those wearing the traditional kilt outfit, but the Irish Jig and Sailors Hornpipe are always a crowd pleaser.
Once again, the ACT Regional Committee of Highland Dancing is running the National Competition in conjunction with the Canberra Burns Club. The Burns Club offers outstanding financial support on the day by providing top class staging and cash prizes for the championships, plus provides a superb venue for competitors and their families. The bistro at the Club will be open for tea and coffee and light snacks from 8.30am onwards, and at midday the lunch menu will be available. Eunice Stewart, President of the Burns Club is a great supporter of the event and presents all major prizes on the day in the spirit of all things Scottish related to the Club.
There are 12 special awards given out at the end of the day to reward those dancers that are striving to improve and need a little bit of extra encouragement to keep going. The competition will commence with championships in all age groups (aged from 7-16 years and over) at 8.30am. Large prize money and great prizes are up for grabs in all three championships to be judged by three female adjudicators from Victoria and NSW. Local dancing pipers Rod Parker and Sean Hodgman will pipe for the dancers on the day. The afternoon session will see children as young as six years take to the stage, plus those dancers yet to reach championship level. A wide variety of dancers are executed not just those wearing the traditional kilt outfit, but the Irish Jig and Sailors Hornpipe are always a crowd pleaser.
Once again, the ACT Regional Committee of Highland Dancing is running the National Competition in conjunction with the Canberra Burns Club. The Burns Club offers outstanding financial support on the day by providing top class staging and cash prizes for the championships, plus provides a superb venue for competitors and their families. The bistro at the Club will be open for tea and coffee and light snacks from 8.30am onwards, and at midday the lunch menu will be available. Eunice Stewart, President of the Burns Club is a great supporter of the event and presents all major prizes on the day in the spirit of all things Scottish related to the Club.

Canberra Potters' Open Day 10am to 3pm
Canberra Potters’ Society opens its doors at Watson Arts Centre on Sunday 6th June for its 2010 Open Day. This is a great opportunity to see potters in action and to join in a range of fun activities.
Highlights include demonstrations of hand-building and throwing on the potter’s wheel. Visitors are encouraged to have a go themselves so if you’ve hankered after trying your hand at clay work now is a great time to fulfil that dream. Raku firing demonstrations will be happening throughout the day and there’ll be lots of information about classes, membership, exhibitions and more.
To keep out the winter chill you can buy a handmade bowl filled with delicious soup and enjoy your lunch listening to the sounds of music provided by a local CPS potter and friends who will be playing over the lunchtime period. To round it off, Coffee’s On will be on the verandah providing tea, coffee and other refreshments.
In the gallery you’ll find not only a great selection of soup bowls but also the Winter Pottery Fair – it has a wonderful array of ceramic jewellery, pottery artworks and items for the home and garden.
For local and visiting potters, Clayworks, Potters Needs and Walker Ceramics will have their usual trade stands. And the Society’s shop - Potters Place - will be open as usual, stocked with yet more ceramic artworks, jewellery, garden and home wares.

more than 2,000 soldiers who died during World
War II while defending Papua New Guinea from

10 people between the ages of 16 and 22 from

Australian Regional Kapa Haka Festival June 2010 9am - 5pm

He was fortunate enough to command at almost every level in the Army and to serve on exchange in Hong Kong with the Gurkhas and in the United States at the Armys Command and General Staff College.
Peter concluded his career in the Army as the Chief of Army. He served in this appointment for 6 years, which was the longest period of service as Chief since General Harry Chauvel in the 1920s. His period of command was marked by the continuous global deployment of Australian soldiers on high-tempo, complex, and demanding combat operations. During his tenure as Chief of Army he was responsible for the rapid expansion and development of the Army to enable it to cope with the many changing demands of modern conflict. His focus was to provide a hardened and networked force with increased adaptability and flexibility.
Since leaving the Army Peter has joined the University of Canberra where he was appointed as a Professor and the foundation Director of the National Security Institute. Peter is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has been appointed to the Boards of Codan Pty Ltd and Electro Optic Systems Holdings Pty Ltd. He is a Director of the Kokoda Foundation and a member of the Defence South Australia Advisory Board.

Joshua Gordon is an amazing young man. Just 20 years old. Joshua is Autistic, intellectually imapaired and suffers Epilepsy. On the 14 February Joshua commenced figure skating and in just three years has reached remarkable results. Joshua's has three test remaining to achieve achieve Senior level in Single and Dance Figure Skating something not seen before, his ultimate dream is to represent Australia at the 2014 Winter Olympics and skate for Disney on Ice. Fund raising is to send Joshua to LA to the Toyota Centre to be trained by Coaches of the years Gold medalist.

Car Raffle for Rooftop Foundation Inc. 12.00pm
We are the Rooftop Foundation Inc., a non-for-profit organisation and we are located in Canberra. We were established at the beginning of 2009 and our aim is to raise money for affordable housing in the A.C.T and surrounding regions. Red Cross has a number of older clients who live in the community and would love the company of a regular visitor. If you are willing to share some of your time and interests with older people to provide companionship and social interaction and are available on weekdays on a weekly or fortnightly basis, we would love to hear from you. Many volunteers and clients have formed long-lasting friendships; your involvement is a great way to make a real difference in someone’s life! Walk to d'feet Motor Neurone Disease 10am
This year, MND NSW and MND Australia are holding their second annual ‘Walk to d’feet MND’ in Canberra. The walk commences at 10am on Sunday the 27th of June, 2010 at the globe at Barrine Drive on Lake Burley Griffin. The walk/run/ride will follow the 5.5km ‘bridge to bridge’. Registration costs $25 for adults and $5 for children. At the end of the walk there will be a sausage sizzle.

Matthew Driver of Lyneham has extensively retrofitted his 1950’s Lyneham house, dramatically reducing electricity, gas and water use and cutting their
households carbon emissions on energy use from 19 Tonne a year to minus one Tonne. Join us for a tour of this house to see what can be achieved with your existing house. On display will be rain water harvesting, DIY grey water distribution, a solar food dryer, a solar food cooker, two DIY solar air heater designs as well as the more conventional solar hot water and solar PV systems.

Walk to d'Feet MND 2010 10am
Please join the Motor Neurone Disease Association in Canberra on Sunday, 27th on June 2010 commencing at 10am at the Captain Cook Globe on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin (access via Barrine Drive). The walk is a 5.5km walk/run/bike ride doing the Lake's ‘Bridge to Bridge'.
Motor Neurone Disease affects about 1400 individuals in Australia, along with their families, carers and friends. By joining us in our walk we raise the awareness and funds to help those people.
Registering is easy, you can join as an individual or a team. Follow the prompts and be a part of something that will change you and MND. You'll be given a fundraising page, and we've made it really easy, it's all online and all you have to do is email your unique fundraising page to your family, friends and work mates and ask for their support - you may need to remind them regularly to dig deep for you.
My Uncle currently suffers from this disease and I would like to get the word out so people can donate and help this worthy cause.
